16 Jul 2025

The Westlake University School of Medicine and the University of Chicago Medical Center recently signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement, marking the beginning of a new chapter in interuniversity collaboration.

The agreement focuses on the practical development of medical education and outlines plans for cooperation in areas such as undergraduate medical education, the construction of affiliated hospitals, and clinical medical faculty training. The collaboration will significantly promote the internationalization of medical education at Westlake University.

Both institutions share a common educational philosophy and a commitment to cultivating interdisciplinary talent. They seek to nurture exceptional scientists who possess both strong academic backgrounds and innovative thinking to address global challenges and further society’s development.

The cooperation between the two institutions will help build a high-quality, internationally oriented medical education system at Westlake’s School of Medicine, which is committed to cultivating physician-scientists who can navigate both basic research and clinical practice.

It will include the development of clinical medicine curricula, exchange of educational philosophies and teaching methodologies, and the systematic training of Westlake clinical faculty in the United States. The University of Chicago Medical Center will also support the construction of Westlake’s research-oriented affiliated hospital to enhance the clinical integration of scientific research.

Both institutions said they looked forward to working together, drawing on each other's experience in the development of medical education systems, research-oriented hospital construction, and clinical faculty training. Together, they aim to explore deep innovations in educational and research systems, create a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary platform for outstanding young scholars, and contribute to solving complex scientific problems facing humanity.

Westlake University, a new type of research university in China supported by public and philanthropic funding, established its School of Medicine in October 2023.
